Christian Marclay Inspires Apple's iPhone Spot
This video on Apple's main page has been going around since the Oscar, so it's a bit of old news. The video doesn't look like the exact one that Marclay famously did several years ago. There are clips that I don't remember being in the original, so I think Apple recut their own footage to look like the Marclay's piece. But everything--the idea, the cut--is basically inspired by Marclay. It's so funny how a piece like that is being co-opted by a corporation like Apple to sell it's iTunes phone. To be honest, it's a perfect match in every way. The thing that Apple probably did, that Marclay never did was to pay fees to clear all of those footage. Marclay was always skirting on the fair use clause when it comes to his video pieces. There was one from a couple of years ago where he cut all the segments of music instruments being played into one long sound piece. It was quite amazing, but all done under the often slippery fair use clause.
So if you haven't checked out Apple's version of "Hello," it's still on their front page. But trust me, the experience is nothing close to seeing the original
