Pomona Second Saturday Artwalk

Posted on 7:05 PM by James | 0 comments

Where else would I end up on the second Saturday night if not in Pomona? It has become my hangout. I am there mostly for my friends Susie Eaton and Juan Thorp. They have become a staple on this blog.

My friends and I were planning to go see the new Jeff Soto show last night in Riverside, but I felt a bit lazy about driving all the way there. So after a short detour to Santa Ana for the @space opening, we headed out to Pomona. I will have to take a trip to to the Riverside Art Museum for the Soto show at some point.

We ended up spending most of the night eating dinner at a bistro in the colony. There is nothing I like more than good conversations over a good meal. The act of eating with friends is the highest form of art, as they say.

The 12 Days Of Saul Bass - Day 1 - Spartacus

Posted on 6:00 PM by James | 0 comments

Welcome to the holidays feature I am doing called The 12 Days of Saul Bass. For the next twelve days up until Christmas Day I will feature one Saul Bass movie title sequence per day. There are no shortage of examples on YouTube, and it's a bit difficult to choose the sequencing. But for the first outing, I thought I would share with you the title sequence for the 1960 classic Spartacus, directed by one of my favorite directors, Stanley Kubrick. This title sequence isn't really the stylistic that Saul Bass has come to be known for. But you can definitely see his hands in it. And I have also noticed that this seemed to have been the direction that he took for the more contemporary movies.

So come back in the next twelve days. I will try to keep the running commentaries to the very minimum. Enjoy!

Yet another massive set. Thank you to Patrick Miller for the wonderful photos. Thank you to everyone who showed up and built a radio. Hopefully you were able to find joy that night. To those of you who could not attend, enjoy the pictures.

Little Pharma Drug Run Bike Route

Here's something really cool. Our photographer for the Little Pharma Drug Run, Patrick Miller, was tracking our route that night on his cellphone. He just sent us the route all mapped out. So for those of you who couldn't attend, you can use this map and go on your very own Drug Run.

Happy Birthday

The mouse turns forty today. No, I am not talking about your cute rodent pet, nor am I talking about Mickey. What I'm talking about is the computer pointing device all you geek and non-geek set know and love.

Forty years ago today, Douglas Englebart presented a public demonstration at the Fall Joint Computer Conference. And the rest as they say is history.

Read about it here and watch the original demonstration here.

Then hear Englebart himself talks about his invention.

KORG DS-10 Straw Talkbox

During the tail end of Finding Joy, Jason brought in his new KORG DS-10 game for the Nintendo DS. We were both geeking out over it. It's a total nerd's dream. It's got two patchable dual-oscillator analog synth simulators with a four-part drum machine, six-track, 16-step sequencer with delay, chorus, and flanger . . . Well you get the idea.

So this little game is the reason why I will be treating myself to a new DS Lite for Christmas. And what will I be doing with my copy of KORG DS-10? Aside from some beat-fuckery, probably silly things like the video above. Apparently you can attach a straw to the speaker of the DS and get a talkbox out of it.

You've got to love music nerd-ology.
