Kiel Johnson: Publish or Perish

Kiel Johnson had an opening last night at Mark Moore Gallery in Santa Monica. I have hardly been to openings at all this year. But I have been a fan of Kiel's work for sometime so when I heard of the new show I was curious as to what he'd produce for it.

The centerpiece of the show is the replica of the printing press pictured above. I love both Kiel's drawings and sculptures, but I'm always particularly impressed by his objects.

Kiel also has a video up on Vimeo that shows him making a twin lens reflex camera. It's pretty amazing to watch. Both the sculpture and the video are in the show as well.

Persimmon

I've decided that I'm going to designate my Fridays Drawing Day. I'm not going to call it Illustration Friday, because more than likely I'll be doing quick sketches in my sketchbook rather than full fledged illustrations. Most days of the week I'm completely tied to the computer and the applications that I use. It's always nice to go back to the bared-bone basics. And for me that's pencils, brushes, and India ink. Besides, I don't get to draw enough. And my skills have suffered because of it.

So my parents have a persimmon tree in their garden. I'm not quite sure what kind it specifically is, but every year it bears a large number of fruits. This year is no exception. They are ripening on the branches, and I'm sure in a couple of weeks' time they will be ready for the picking. Some are getting pretty close. Like the one I used as my model for example. They go pretty quickly each year. Before I know it, my family have consumed them all.

Google Japanese Commercials

I have been going through the Google Japan channel on YouTube these past couple of days. Here are a couple more I am sharing. I love the Japanese's sense of style. You can always count on them to create something that's a bit quirky. The one thing I like is that there is always this sense of fun that you can clearly see. That definitely translates into these commercials for Google.
